Air quality affects our health every day, yet most of us don't track it with the same attention we give to weather forecasts or traffic updates. That's why I'm excited to introduce a new suite of Twitter bots designed to keep residents of India's major cities informed about the air they breathe.
Meet Your New Air Quality Assistants
I've created three dedicated Twitter bots that provide daily air quality updates for three of India's largest metropolitan areas:
@AQIBengaluru - Daily air quality updates for Bengaluru
@AQIDelhi - Daily air quality updates for Delhi NCR
@AQIMumbai - Daily air quality updates for Mumbai
Each bot tweets once every morning with the current Air Quality Index (AQI), the specific levels of PM2.5 and PM10 particulates, and a simple explanation of what these numbers mean for your health.
Why This Matters
In India, air pollution contributes to approximately 1.7 million deaths annually. Cities like Delhi regularly experience AQI levels that would trigger public health emergencies in many countries. Yet despite these alarming statistics, air quality awareness remains surprisingly low.
Most people don't realize that:
Even moderate air pollution can trigger respiratory issues
PM2.5 particles are small enough to enter your bloodstream
Indoor air quality can be significantly worse than outdoor air without proper ventilation
Simple behavioral changes can dramatically reduce your exposure to pollutants
How These Bots Help
Each morning, our bots fetch the latest air quality data from the OpenWeatherMap API and deliver it directly to your Twitter timeline. No need to download another app or remember to check a website.
The tweets include:
Current AQI value and category (Good, Moderate, Poor, etc.)
PM2.5 and PM10 concentration levels
A color-coded indicator for quick visual reference
Basic health recommendations based on the current readings
The Vision: Beyond Twitter
These Twitter bots are just the beginning. Our vision is to create a comprehensive air quality awareness ecosystem that includes:
City-specific information hubs at BetterAQI.com with detailed data for each location
Community-driven reporting to supplement official monitoring stations
Personalized recommendations based on your health profile and location
Advocacy tools to help citizens push for cleaner air policies
We believe that awareness is the first step toward action. When people understand the quality of the air they breathe, they're more likely to take steps to protect themselves and advocate for larger systemic changes.
How You Can Help
The best way to support this initiative is to:
Follow the bot for your city to receive daily updates
Retweet the daily updates to help spread awareness
Share your feedback on what additional information would be helpful
Air quality affects everyone, regardless of age, income, or location. By making this information more accessible, we hope to contribute to healthier communities and a growing movement for cleaner air across India.
